TUDOR CITY LIMITS

April 8, 2010

Tudor City was recorded at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City in June 2009.  The 17-track album album explores the sacred music of Tudor England, but it takes its name from a historic residential complex on Manhattan’s East Side.  The iconic TUDOR CITY rooftop sign has been a feature of the New York skyline for nearly a century.

Interspersed among masterpieces by Tye, Taverner and Tallis, four new works by British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith add modern harmonic richness and complexity.  The result is a compelling synthesis of ancient and contemporary vocal music.

Two sample tracks from Tudor City (William Byrd’s Audivi vocem and Thomas Tallis’ God Grant With Grace) have been added to NYP’s MySpace audio player (at right).   To preview other tracks, please listen to clips here.
