In June 2011, New York Polyphony and Indaba Music joined forces to host an online Gregorian chant remix competition called Devices & Desires. The contest made available three of the genre’s “greatest hits” (Victimae paschali laudes, Gaudeamus in omnes Domino, and Beati mundo corde) recorded exclusively for Indaba Music by NYP. Each chant was featured in a stand-alone contest, allowing entrants to remix their favorite.
The competition was a resounding success, yielding hundreds of submissions in a dizzying array of styles from musicians all over the world. In August, after spending many enjoyable hours reviewing each submission, New York Polyphony selected a grand prize winner and a runner-up for each of the three chants.
Now, the winning remixes alongside the original chant recordings are available as a 9-track digital EP exclusively on Ariama.com, the new online classical music store from Sony Music.
